Description :
| When the opening track - between the arrival and departure of the German Jazz Police Orchestra - unravels the anarchic playing of the FUN HORNS, ignoring all musical taboos, it becomes obvious that this unique quartet will not submit to any pure doctrine of whatever nature. The FUN HORNS from East-Berlin counter the tiring monotony of each respective genre with capering vitality. Following their own taste, Volker Schlott (saxophone/flute), Thomas Klemm (sax, flute, vocals), Jörg Huke (trombone), and Joachim Hesse (trumpet, flugelhorn) weave and amalgamate the unheard with the outrageous. Complete stylistic independence is their program. Here we have four horns wanting to have fun with each other and wanting to convey that same feeling! What we hear is reminescent of Free Jazz, which was of immeasurable importance for the emancipation of the first generation of East German musicians, renaissance chorales, ethno-sounds and even includes a frolicsome version of Mozart’s nachtmusik as these four splendid improvizers present their young, fresh version of five centuries of wind music. The FUN HORNS combine sophisticated instrumental technique - each member has a classical music training plus their practice on the jazz scene - with great innovative ability. Small wonder, therefore, that the quartet swells to orchestral power by way of the craziest rhythmic embracings or turns itself into a far-east percussion ensemble by tapping the keys of their saxophones or the mouthpieces of their brass instruments. In view of this abundance of surprises, the title of their fully digitised first CD verges on an understatement. The FUN HORNS - in perfect harmony with each other after innumerable performances in clubs and at festivals at home and abroad - recorded SURPRISE “live” at the Burgsinn studio. Only the track “From Mexico to Bali”, to let you into the secret, was overdubbed by a flute. The atmosphere of the natural sound echo in “Last Dream” was trapped in a room adjacent to the recording studio. (Peter Rixen) |
