Description :
| Since the state coffers were quite low on western currency it was an exchange for equivalent goods that finally made the impossible come true. “Will trade: World famous jazz band for high-quality optical goods from Zeiss Jena.” The deal was negotiated between the State Artists' Agency of the German Democratic Republic (the sole authorized agency for performances by foreign artists) and a renowned agency in Switzerland. It was thus that in 1965, the fourth year of the “Wall”, that a really incredible sensation took place; Louis Armstrong played East Germany! The concerts - all of them sell-outs of course - which were held in the (old) Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin (March 20 - 22, 6 concerts) in the Leipzig Exhibition Hall III (March 23 - 24, 4 concerts) and five other concerts ( April 6 - 8) in the largest halls available in Magdeburg, Erfurt and Schwerin were part of the very first tour by Louis Armstrong's All Stars behind what was then the “Iron Curtain” (incl. Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria). Consequently, the tour not only received much international attention, it also became a political matter.Arriving from Prague at noon on March 20, 1965 the Armstrong All Stars were given a grand, both enthusiastic and rousing reception at Berlin's Schönefeld Airport, a welcome that quite a number of prominent politicians might have wished for. A highly official welcoming address, a swarm of reporters from both East and West representing the printed media, radio and television were there. Then, penetrating the babble of voices came “When It's Sleep Time Down South” played by Berlin's “Jazz Optimisten” for their idol Satchmo. He smiled and, just leaving a radio reporter standing, joined the band and sung “his” song into the sudden silence that seemed filled with magic. It was a moment I'll never forget when the disarmingly warm, simply human personality of the “Boy from New Orleans” so touchingly revealed himself... |
