Description :
| Very few artists can make the transition from being the rock industry’s enfant terrible (its in the dictionary ) to being an acclaimed songwriting powerhouse. Morgana Ancone, with her first post-Nitocris album, Meet the Monstars, has achieved exactly that. With one nine track album, Morgana and the Monstars have raised the creative bar significantly. Meet the Monstars is an album of adventurous and seductive new paths, a model of what music can be when it comes from the heart. This is an album that explores the beauty that lies within the truth. Meet the Monstars engages eclecticism as an aesthetic and derives much of its power from the energy generated by creative collaborations. Formerly best known as the charismatic front-woman of the much loved rock outfit Nitocris, Meet the Monstars confirms Morgana’s standing as one of Australia’s most accomplished songwriters. During their decade together Nitocris would record two albums and five EPs, perform approximately XXXXXX gigs, and appear on every major Australian rock festival bill. They made countless appearances on television and radio, including a featured role in ABC TVs Love is a Four Letter Word and Morgana contributed vocals to the Original Film Soundtrack for Love and Other Catastrophes. Nitocris were nominated for an ARIA award in 2001, and listed amongst the Drum Media’s most influential Australian bands of the 1990s. Morgana and the Monstars began in 2000 when Morgana was invited to sing at one of Jeff Duff’s notorious tribute nights. On that night Morgana met Joseph Calderazzo (Akradia, Jeff Duff, Matt Finish) and an all but immediate artistic affinity developed between the two of them. Morgana and Joseph began to jam and the Monstars were born. Joseph’s undisputed talent as a guitarist forms a cornerstone for the Monstars. His ability to move through genres and his capacity for innovation has made Joseph one of Australia’s most admired and sought after guitarists. Nobody will deny that he is simply one of the best guitar players working. The emotional tone of the album is central to its success. Everything is on display here, the honesty can be gut-wrenching. These songs are about a real world where pain and confusion and joy and reason all meet to form the substance of life. The beauty of Morgana’s voice seduces the bittersweet lyrics through to the heart where they explode like little emotional grenades. Suddenly you realise that you are sharing someone’s deepest fears, their most painful hurts. The skill involved in creating such beauty through words attests to Morgana’s capacity as a poet. While most writers torture meaning from words, Morgana has a remarkable ability to delicately tease images and emotions from their use. Morgana and the Monstars is an amorphous project, always keen to form new collaborations and experiment with new sounds. The performing lineup often changes, a dynamic reflected in the range of exceptionally talented musicians who appear on this recording. Until personal demands called him elsewhere, Paul Woseen of the Screaming Jets served on bass and vocals. Fortunately, Paul has returned to contribute bass-tracks on two songs here, Plane Ticket and Home. Sara Gray, formerly the bass player in Nitocris occupies the bass player’s slot. Sara’s forceful and elegant bass playing makes her one of the most distinctive bass players working today and her talents are displayed to the fullest here. Drummer Tony Ward, completes the rhythm line. A big fan of risky sports, Tony has ten years experience playing in bands including Critical Mass, Helter Paye and survived a stint in the house band at the Hard Rock Café in Djarkarta. Words won’t easily convey the contribution made by the sublimely graceful backing vocals of Tara Mai Millet that appear on many of the tracks here. Equally atmospheric is Melissa Shong’s (Dead Inside the Chrysalis) contribution on strings. Melissa plays her treasured five string electric violin on Bathed in Beauty (Creature) and can be heard playing Viola on Plane Ticket & Better. Adding to the air of reckless eclecticism are the samples provided by infamous |
