Description :
| This project was an experiment, the first of a series in exploring the capabilities of the Roland XP-50 synthesizer. The decision to employ J. S. Bach's Musical Offering was a deliberate one: it was not written for any particular instrument. The term “cycle” doesn't quite apply to this type of composition; the pieces are not organized in a particular (or even in a prescribed) order. Several pieces are perpetual canons, and were perhaps intended to be viewed in more of a “mathematical” sense, rather than in a performance situation, much like the techniques of “sampling” and “looping” on a modern-day synthesizer. My interest and involvement in this composition was so profound, that I humbly decided to add some original renditions (tracks 9 and 14) of the Musical Offering's famous theme. I am cautiously optimistic that the composer will not be turning in his grave due to my actions. |
