Aichingers Großmutter und die jüngeren Geschwister der Mutter wurden 1942 deportiert und umgebracht. 1945 beginnt Ilse Aichinger ein Medizinstudium, das sie 1947 abbricht, um ihren zum Teil autobiographischen Roman "Die größere Hoffnung" zu schreiben und sich künftig gänzlich der Literatur zu widmen. Mit Aichingers Text "Das vierte Tor" wird zum ersten Mal in der österreichischen Literatur etwas über Konzentrationslager veröffentlicht. 1949 - 1950 war Ilse Aichinger Lektorin beim S. | ab 1951 war sie Mitglied der Gruppe 47, die sich 1967 auflöste. Von 1953 bis zu dessen Tod 1972 war sie mit dem Schriftsteller Günther Eich verheiratet. Ilse Aichinger lebte in Deutschland und in Portugal - seit 1988 lebt sie wieder in Wien. 1995 erhielt Ilse Aichinger den Großen Österreichischen Staatspreis. |
