| Lt. Herzogs Originalunterlagen handelt es sich bei dieser Sammlung um insgesamt 315 Walzen mit 462 Liedern. Die Walzen 1 - 257 wurden mit einem Phonographen (bei Herzog Ph.R.), die Walzen 258 - 315 mit einem Dictaphon (bei Herzog D.R.) gemacht. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Formate kam es in Berlin bei der Beschriftung und Inventarisierung zu Problemen. Die Beschriftung der Walzen lautet "Wheelwright Navaho Hail" (für die Walzen 1 - 257 und 316) und "Herzog Navaho Hail" bzw. "Herzog Navaho Night Chant" (für die Walzen 258 - 313, 315, 317). Die Walzen wurden in mehreren Sendungen nach Berlin geschickt, der 1. Teil (W. 1 - 257 + 316, kleine Walzen, beschriftet "Wheelwright Navaho Hail" als FE 7, der 2. Teil (W. 258 - 313, 315, 317, große Walzen, beschriftet als "Herzog Navaho Hail" bzw. "Herzog Navaho Night Chant " als FE 9 inventarisiert. Lt. Orig.dok. besteht die Sammlung inhaltlich aus zwei Teilen: die W. 1 - 189 gehören zu den "Day-songs", die W. 190 - 315 zu den "Night- songs". Galvanisierung und Herstellung mehrerer Kopien wurde von Mrs. Mary Wheelwright bezahlt. Umfangreiche Korrespondenz mit Mrs. Wheelright liegt vor. Kopien der Galvanos gingen lt. Korrespondenz an: American Museum of Natural History (New York), Bureau of American Ethnology (Washington), Mr. Kenneth Chapman (Santa Fe) und Dr. Sapir, Dept. of Anthropology, University of Chicago. Kopien der Sammlung befinden sich heute in Washington (vgl. FCP:76), dort bezeichnet als "Navaho Indian Music - Hail Chant". Die dort fehlenden Kopien können bis auf W. 314 in Berlin ersetzt werden. Texte und Transkriptionen befinden sich im Nachlaß von Herzog in USA. (wo ?) |
